#1 CO Detector of 2025

FORBES TODAY WIRED Good Housekeeping Men's Health
The silent killer

You can't see it, smell it, or taste it.

Carbon monoxide comes from furnaces, water heaters, stoves, garages. And if your detector's sensor has quietly died — the green light stays on anyway.

400+

Deaths per year in the US

Americans killed by accidental CO poisoning every year. Most never knew there was a problem.

50K+

ER visits annually

Headaches, confusion, nausea — often mistaken for the flu. By then, CO levels are already dangerous.

7yr

Sensors die silently

CO detector sensors wear out in 5–7 years. The green light keeps glowing anyway — most people never know theirs stopped working.

Meet AirGuard™

The detector with a display.

Plug it in at eye level. See the number. Know you're safe — or act fast if you're not.

AirGuard close-up
  • See danger at 0 PPM

Real-time digital display shows CO, natural gas, and propane levels — not just a yes/no alarm.

  • 3-in-1 protection

CO, natural gas, and propane — all in one device. Most detectors only catch one.

  • 30-second install

No ladder. No tools. No electrician. Just plug into any wall outlet at eye level.

  • Sensor self-test

One-button test confirms your sensor is alive. No more green lights glowing over a dead detector.

Worth it just for week one

Ok so I bought this after my brother in law's family had a scare last winter (they were fine, turned out their old detector was dead). Figured i'd get one for peace of mind. Week 1, Tuesday morning, I see the number is at 23 PPM in the basement. My $40 First Alert upstairs? Quiet as always. Called the HVAC guy same day, cracked heat exchanger on a 9 year old furnace. $850 repair but honestly probably a lot more than that if we'd slept through a bad night. Just get the 4 pack. Don't mess around with this stuff.

For my dad

My dad is 78 and lives alone in Pittsburgh. I worry about him. Bought him the 2 pack and drove over to plug them in myself because I knew he wouldnt. Now when i call him on Sundays the first thing i ask is "what's the number say dad" and he reads it to me. 0 every time. Silly little ritual but it makes me feel better.

Good, not great

Had this about 2 months now. The live PPM readout is legit useful and the display is way easier to read than my old Kidde. Only gripe: the alarm when you hit the test button is noticeably quieter than my old one - measured it at 78dB vs the 85 Kiddes put out. Not a dealbreaker but worth knowing if you have a big house. Build quality is fine, nothing premium, feels about right for the price. Would still buy again, just being honest.

my gas stove actually leaks CO??

Bought this because i read that gas stoves leak low levels of CO even when everything seems fine. Husband thought i was being paranoid lol. Plugged it in, cooked dinner (stir fry, both burners on), watched the number go from 0 to 4 to 6 PPM. Turned on the range hood and it dropped back to 0 in about 10 min. Not dangerous levels obviously but I HAD NO IDEA. We run the hood every single time now. Also makes me feel way better about my toddler being in the kitchen while i cook.

Does what it says

Plugged it in a month ago. Haven't had to think about CO since. That's basically the highest compliment i can give a product like this.

After the news story

There was a family in my town last November that all got sick from CO, made the local news. Two little kids ended up in the hospital, thankfully they were ok. I have two small kids of my own. Ordered the 4 pack that same night. Arrived in 4 days, packaging was pretty minimal (small box, bit of bubble wrap, no excessive plastic which i appreciated). Plugged them in the same afternoon — basement, main floor, hallway outside the bedrooms, and one in the home office. Honestly i wish i'd bought these years ago. Price for 4 was more than fair. No complaints at all.

Common questions

Before you buy

How is this different from the detector I already own?

Standard CO alarms only sound after CO reaches 70 PPM for 1–4 hours. Below that, they stay silent — even though 30 PPM can cause headaches and 50 PPM is the OSHA workplace limit.

AirGuard has a digital display that updates in real time. The moment the number climbs above zero, you know — and you can ventilate, check your furnace, or call the gas company before anyone feels sick.

Will it false-alarm when I cook?

No. The sensor is calibrated for carbon monoxide, natural gas, and propane — not steam, smoke, or cooking aerosols. You'll see the number tick up slightly when cooking (useful — it confirms your gas stove is venting properly), but it won't shriek over a seared steak.

Is it hard to install?

Nothing to install. Plug into any standard wall outlet at eye level. Most customers have it running in under 30 seconds. No ladder, no tools, no hardwiring, no electrician.

How many do I need?

Safety authorities recommend one CO detector on every floor plus near every sleeping area. For most single-family homes that's 3–4. Apartments usually need 2.

The 4-pack is our best-selling option for exactly that reason.

What if it doesn't work for me?

Try it for 100 nights. If you don't love it, send it back for a full refund — we even cover return shipping. After the trial, every AirGuard is covered by our lifetime warranty.

Can I use it in a rental?

Yes. Plugs into any standard 120V US outlet. No drilling, no hardwiring, no landlord approval required. Move? Unplug it and take it with you.

When does it ship?

Orders placed before 3 PM EST ship the same day from our international warehouse. Most customers receive their AirGuard within 6-10 business days. Shipping is free on every order.

Can someone vouch for this? Saw the ad three times today and my wife is pregnant so I'm not taking any chances with our gas furnace. Is it actually legit or just another drop-ship detector?

@Marcus — works awesome man. I ordered the 4-pack about 6 weeks ago after my brother-in-law had a scare with his water heater. One on each floor + one in the hallway outside the bedrooms. Display is bright enough to see from across the room and it's been reading 0 PPM consistently. When I ran my car in the garage for like 20 seconds (door open) it ticked up to 7 and then settled back. Felt good knowing it actually works. Don't overthink it, just get the 4-pack — you'll want one near the nursery for sure.

We have a gas stove and I've been paranoid ever since I read that study last year. My regular alarm has NEVER gone off but I don't feel safe. Does this one actually show the low levels you can't smell? That's the whole reason I'm here.

Yep. Got one mounted near our gas stove in the kitchen. It reads between 2–6 PPM when the burners are going and drops back to 0 within 10 min of turning the exhaust fan on. Honestly kind of eye-opening. We run the hood every time now.

Renting an older apartment and the only CO alarm the building installed is like 15 years old and yellowed. Landlord won't replace it. Can I use this without drilling or hardwiring? Need something I can take with me when I move.

Just plugs into a regular outlet. I live in a rental too and it literally took 10 seconds to set up. Unplug & pack it when you move. No landlord approval needed since you're not installing anything.

32 years retired from the fire service. Responded to more CO calls than I can count — usually when someone already had a headache or worse. The digital PPM readout is the right idea. Standard alarms only trigger above 70 PPM sustained. By then the damage is already starting. Bought the 4-pack for my kids' houses. Sleep better knowing it's there.

Nope. I cook a LOT (burned toast included) and it's never gone off from cooking. The sensor only picks up CO, not smoke/steam. My smoke alarm still yells at me though lol

How many do you actually need? We have a 2-story + basement with the furnace down there. Would 2 be enough or should I go 4?

4-pack for sure. One in the basement near the furnace (biggest risk), one on main floor, one outside the bedrooms upstairs, one extra. Plus the 4-pack works out to half the per-unit price. It's a no-brainer.

Anyone had it 6+ months? Curious if the sensor degrades or if accuracy drifts. Don't want to trust something that quietly stops working after a year.

Had mine 8 months now. Self-tests weekly (small tick the display does — you get used to it). Reading is still 0 when idle and climbs predictably when I run the dryer. No drift I can tell. Lifetime warranty covers replacement anyway.

Honest question — does it work during a power outage? We lose power every winter storm and that's usually when people break out the generators (which is when CO deaths actually spike).

Linda K. Verified Buyer 2 weeks ago
Honest answer: no, it's plug-in only. That's my one gripe. I keep one battery-backup unit in the hallway as a second layer, and use AirGuard units for the live PPM reading everywhere else. For generator safety specifically — keep the genset 20+ ft from any window/door and you're fine.

Why is the 4-pack WAY cheaper per unit than the single? Kinda feels suspicious. Is this some bulk-discount-so-you-buy-more trick or are the units actually the same?

Same unit. Bulk discount. I compared mine side by side with my sister's single-pack — identical packaging, identical sensor module, same serial format. They clearly want you to buy 4 because that's what safety orgs recommend anyway. Not a trick, just aligned incentives.

Going to share my story because I think it matters. Bought the 4-pack in October. Second week of November, one morning the basement unit was reading 14 PPM. My old alarm upstairs was silent. Called HVAC guy same day — turned out the furnace's heat exchanger had a small crack and was venting CO into the return air. Had it replaced that afternoon. My wife was 6 months pregnant at the time. I don't want to think about what would've happened if I'd waited until the old alarm triggered at 70 PPM for 4 hours straight. This thing paid for itself ten times over in one morning.

Use mine in my Class B. Just need an inverter or 12V adapter since it's 120V. Reads propane combustion byproducts perfectly — caught an issue with my fridge vent last trip actually.

Small detail but the display backlight is dim enough at night that it doesn't disturb us sleeping, but bright enough that I can read it at 3am on baby duty without flipping on the hallway light. Clearly designed by someone with kids.

Replaced a 12-year-old First Alert that was yellowed and occasionally chirping for no reason. The real reason I switched: I wanted to actually see the PPM number. The old ones just beep blindly once CO is already dangerous. This one tells you the story as it develops. Big difference.

Had one "false alarm" that turned out not to be false at all. Climbed to 23 PPM one morning — traced it to my car which had been running briefly in the attached garage while I ran inside for keys. CO seeped through the door seal. Fixed the door weatherstripping that weekend. This detector did exactly what it's supposed to do.

No app — just the display. Honestly I see that as a plus. No wifi dependence, no account signup, no battery-drain background service, no cloud outage that leaves you unprotected. Fewer failure modes = safer. YMMV.

Former paramedic here. CO quietly kills more people than house fires every winter. The symptoms mimic the flu — headache, nausea, confusion — so people sleep it off and don't wake up. If you have ANY combustion appliance (furnace, water heater, gas stove, fireplace, attached garage) you need a detector on every floor. Buy it, plug it in, and forget about it. Your future self will thank you.
