Carbon monoxide sends more than 100,000 Americans to emergency rooms every year, hospitalizes roughly 14,000, and kills more than 400. And a striking share of those cases happen when the weather is warm — on lakes, at campsites, in backyards, and in the chaotic days after a summer storm knocks out the power. The gas doesn't care what season it is. It only cares that fuel is burning and people are breathing nearby.

The winter myth, and why it persists

The association between CO and cold weather makes intuitive sense. Furnaces, boilers, and space heaters are combustion appliances, and winter is when they work hardest inside closed-up homes. Public health campaigns have leaned into that seasonality for decades, timing alarm-check reminders to the first cold snap.

But that framing has a side effect: it teaches people to lower their guard the moment the heating turns off. The mental model becomes "CO is a furnace problem," when the truth is that carbon monoxide is produced any time a carbon-based fuel — gasoline, propane, charcoal, diesel, natural gas — burns incompletely. That happens in July just as readily as in January. What changes in summer isn't the chemistry. It's the settings.

The generator: summer's deadliest appliance

If winter's villain is the faulty furnace, summer's is the portable generator. Severe thunderstorms, hurricanes, and heat-wave blackouts send people scrambling for backup power — and generators kill dozens of Americans every year, making them the single largest source of consumer-product CO deaths.

The pattern is grimly predictable. A storm knocks out power. A family runs a generator in the garage "with the door open," or on a porch, or just outside a window. Exhaust seeps indoors. The early symptoms — headache, fatigue, nausea — feel like stress or a summer bug, so nobody connects the dots. After Hurricane Irma, researchers counted more deaths from generator-related carbon monoxide poisoning than from the storm itself.

The rule is simple and non-negotiable: generators run outdoors only, at least 20 feet from any door, window, or vent, with the exhaust pointed away from the house. An open garage door is not ventilation. A porch is not outdoors.

On the water, the danger hides in plain air

For years, experts assumed CO poisoning couldn't happen outside. Boats proved them wrong. Gasoline engines and onboard generators pump exhaust into the air around a vessel, and under the right conditions that exhaust doesn't disperse — it pools.

Investigators at Lake Powell documented CO concentrations near houseboat swim platforms reaching levels many times higher than what's considered immediately dangerous to life, all in open air. Swimmers lounging on rear decks or playing near the stern were breathing lethal exhaust without ever smelling a thing. A related phenomenon, sometimes called the "station wagon effect," pulls exhaust forward into the boat itself as it moves, poisoning passengers in the cabin or open cockpit.

Hundreds of boating-related CO poisonings have been documented in the U.S., with well over a hundred deaths — and those are only the recognized cases. The symptoms mimic seasickness, sunstroke, and too many drinks, so victims and their companions often blame the wrong thing until someone loses consciousness. Some drownings, investigators believe, were CO poisonings first.

The campsite, the cookout, and the "just for a minute" mistake

Camping season brings its own quiet toll. Charcoal grills carried inside a tent to ward off an evening chill. Propane heaters running in a zipped-up camper. A camp stove used inside an RV with the vents closed. Each of these turns a small enclosed space into a gas chamber with astonishing speed, because tents and campers hold far less air than a house — there's nowhere for the CO to dilute.

The same logic applies at home in summer. Charcoal briquettes produce enormous amounts of carbon monoxide and should never burn in a garage, basement, or screened porch, even "just until the coals die down." Gas-powered pressure washers, mowers, and other tools running in sheds or garages have poisoned people in minutes. And the classic mistake — idling a car in an attached garage while loading up for a trip — doesn't need cold weather to be deadly.

Why summer CO is harder to catch

Winter CO poisoning at least happens where the alarms are. Most homes now have detectors near bedrooms, and a furnace leak stands a decent chance of tripping one. Summer exposures happen where alarms usually aren't: boats, tents, RVs, garages, worksites, and homes suddenly running a generator during a blackout.

The symptoms conspire against detection too. Headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and fatigue are easy to blame on heat, dehydration, motion sickness, alcohol, or a long day in the sun. When a whole family or boatload starts feeling off at once, that shared misery is one of the clearest warning signs — and one of the most commonly missed.

What actually keeps people safe

The protective habits are cheap, boring, and extremely effective:

Put battery-powered CO alarms in the house year-round, within 10 feet of every sleeping area, and test them when the seasons change — not just in fall. Bring a portable CO detector on boats, in RVs, and on camping trips; marine-rated alarms exist for exactly this reason. Keep every fuel-burning device — generators, grills, stoves, heaters — outside and away from openings into living space, full stop. On boats, keep swimmers away from exhaust ports and swim platforms while engines or generators run, and never let anyone "teak surf" or ride close behind the transom. And if several people develop headaches or nausea at the same time in the same place, get everyone into fresh air first and ask questions later. Emergency rooms can measure CO in blood and confirm the diagnosis.

The bottom line

Carbon monoxide isn't a winter problem that takes a vacation in June. It's a combustion problem, and Americans burn fuel in every month of the year — to power homes through blackouts, push boats across lakes, grill dinner, and heat tents. The gas produced is the same colorless, odorless, tasteless poison whether it comes from a furnace in February or a generator in July.

The furnace-and-frost image of CO poisoning saved lives by getting alarms into homes. The next chapter of that public health story is convincing people that the danger follows the fuel — onto the water, into the campground, and out to the backyard — all year long.
