7 Things HVAC Techs Check Before Trusting A Carbon Monoxide Detector With Their Life

If you have a standard white carbon monoxide detector on your wall, you probably trust that it’s protecting your family. But that green light only tells you one thing:

The detector has power. It does not tell you your home is carbon monoxide-free.

After 20 years in HVAC and forensic investigation, I’ve seen homes with dangerous Carbon Monoxide levels while standard detectors never alarmed. That changed how I judge every carbon monoxide detector.

Here are the 7 things I check before I’d bet my family’s life on one.

1. Make Sure Your Detector Shows Carbon Monoxide Levels

Most standard carbon monoxide detectors only sound after carbon monoxide reaches dangerous levels and stays there for a certain amount of time.

That means carbon monoxide can be building up in your home without you knowing it.

So make sure you get a detector that shows carbon monoxide levels starting from 0 PPM.

You should be able to see what’s in the air your family is breathing and act before you’re forced to wait for an alarm.

2. Make Sure It Detects CO, Natural Gas & Propane

Many homes rely on gas furnaces, stoves, water heaters, or propane appliances, so carbon monoxide isn’t the only gas-related risk to think about.

That’s why I always look for a detector that can also detect natural gas and propane.

3. Make Sure It Still Works During A Blackout

Power outages are exactly when your carbon monoxide detector shouldn’t stop protecting your family.

Generators, space heaters, and backup heating sources can increase the risk of carbon monoxide buildup when the power is out.

Make sure your detector has a backup battery, so it keeps watching over your family even when the lights go out.

4. Make Sure It’s Easy To Install

A carbon monoxide detector should be easy to install and easy to move when needed.

Sentivo detector plugs directly into a standard wall outlet, so there’s no wiring, drilling, or waiting for someone to install it.

Plug it in where you need it, move it whenever you want, and start monitoring right away.

5.  Make Sure It’s Portable

When you stay in a hotel, Airbnb, or vacation rental, you’re trusting a place you don’t know to protect the people you care about.

You may have no idea if there’s a carbon monoxide detector nearby, how old it is, or whether it would warn you in time.

That’s why I always want a detector I can bring with me, set up in seconds, and know is watching over my family wherever we sleep.

6. Make Sure It Has A Flame-Retardant Build

Carbon monoxide detectors are often placed near furnaces, boilers, garages, and basements.

So make sure the detector itself is built from flame-retardant material.

Sentivo uses a flame-retardant housing designed to hold up in the areas where CO problems are most likely to start.

7. Make Sure It Has A Guaranteed Sensor Lifespan

A study indexed by the NIH (National Institutes of Health) tested 30 carbon monoxide detectors already in use inside U.S. homes.

40% failed to alarm at hazardous CO levels, even though they still appeared to be working normally, with no obvious sign that the sensing function had failed.

That’s why I always check the sensor lifespan, not just the green light.

Sentivo uses a lab-grade electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor rated for up to 10 years of service.

What Customers Are Saying

built to protect. backed for life.

Carbon monoxide fills the house. No smell. No color. And the ceiling alarm stays silent.

The first signs (headaches, nausea, feeling tired) feel just like the flu.

So people go to bed instead of getting out.

Sentivo Detector™ shows you the CO level as a live number on its screen, so you see a problem building while it’s still just a number, not an emergency.

KNOW BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE

Four sensors, one live screen, and a battery backup that keeps watching when the power goes out.
